New Covent Garden Market celebrates the Coronation on Merchants Way

May 2023

From Wednesday 3rd May and across the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend, if you pop down to the VINCI ST. Modwen created Merchants Way, the public thoroughfare that connects Wandsworth Road with the US Embassy Quarter and passes through New Covent Garden Market, you’ll find two brilliant installations designed to mark the Coronation of King Charles III.

The installations were created by floral designers Sophie Hanna and Michelle Rust and are a celebration by NCGM Fruit and Vegetable Market and Flower Market with the local Nine Elms and Vauxhall community of the crowning of our new king.

Each installation, in two separate alcoves on Merchants Way, features three crowns adorned with wonderful, sustainably sourced products from the respective markets. One alcove has been decorated with seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables, sourced from all corners of the globe, while the other is adorned with fresh and faux flowers and plants – all from the UK’s largest and leading Horticulture Wholesale Market, which has been part of the local community for 49 years.

Within the fruit and vegetable display, the three very regal crowns are laden with chili peppers, fennel, garlic, radishes, garlic, carrots, baby turnips and string beans and we’re also displaying small crates of watermelons, asparagus, limes, courgettes, Scotch Bonnets and more.

For the Flower installation, Sophie and her assistant on the project Michelle Rust decorated the three golden crowns with roses, cornflowers, hydrangeas and blossom and the vases feature a glorious selection of ranunculus, lilies, hydrangeas, sweet peas and delphiniums

In recognition of His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s principles, the products used are fairly and sustainably sourced.

People are urged to come along and pop in to see the colourful displays and, at selected times, meet people who work for the market’s landlord, Covent Garden Market Authority, and find out about job opportunities in your local market.
