COVENT GARDEN MARKET GOES FOR GOLD AT CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

March 2016

Covent Garden Market has scooped two awards at 2016’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, with its debut appearance at the world-renowned event.

The Flower Market wowed judges and the public with an amazing 360 degree floral art installation to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday and to support the current redevelopment of the Flower Market.

The dramatic floral installation, entitled ‘Behind Every Great Florist,’ won the RHS Chelsea Gold medal as well as the New Design Award for most innovative stand in the Great Pavilion.

Using 10,000 stems, 35 specialists and six months of planning, ‘Behind Every Great Florist’ was designed and created by Veevers Carter, a customer of the Flower Market for over 30 years and one of London’s leading florists.

The exhibit was designed to symbolise the relationship between the Flower Market and the independent florists that provide flowers to London everyday. This was symbolised through a three metre high wall of the Flower Market’s iconic black flower buckets bursting with green and white flowers from across the world on one side, erupting into a brightly coloured floral representation of the Queen’s profile.

The two sides were tied together by streams of yellow ribbon designed to represent the bustling and vibrant trading environment of the Flower Market and the strong and lasting relationship between the market and the independent florists.

The world-famous Flower Market is to be given a state-of-the-art new home as part of the redevelopment of New Covent Garden Market being undertaken by Vinci St. Modwen and the Covent Garden Market Authority.
